Asian Story Theatre Field Trip Success!

Young Audiences and Asian Story Theater presented the field trip "Super Shave Ice" to over 1,800 students last March 28-30. Over 20 schools throughout San Diego joined Asian Story Theatre for six performances at Market Creek Plaza's unique outdoor amphitheater location located in the Lincoln Park area of San Diego.

ArtsBusXpress partnered with Young Audiences to transport over 600 of these students to Market Creek Plaza where they experienced the Asian-Pacific culture through colorful costumes, music, dance, comedy and martial arts. The story followed a young man named Disney and his quest to put on a fantastic beach concert.

Special thanks to the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation for funding ticket underwriting and bus transportation through their Spirit of the Diamond grant.

Residency Final Performances

It's that time of the year again! Young Audiences Residency Programs are concluding with Final Performances for parents, teachers, family and friends. These performances give students a chance to build self-confidence, teamwork, and community feelings as they showcase their art work for all to see. Below are just a few highlights as well as volunteer opportunities for you to get involved in helping these wonderful kids feel successful.

Lakeside Farms Dance and Math Integration with Jessica Curiel

This program is a component of the Lakeside School District Arts Academy under the direction of Superintendent Sam Mershon and the San Diego County Office of Education Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator Ron Jessee. The Arts Academy programs provides professional development for classroom teachers integrating arts instruction with core curriculum subjects. Jessica Curiel taught dance and math integration programs for 5th graders at Lakeside Farms and Lemon Crest and Faith Jensen-Ismay taught two middle school programs integrating dance with physical education and athletics at Lakeside Middle and Tierra del Sol Middle.

Mount Vernon Elementary Multi-Grade, Multi-Discipline Arts Showcase

This residency featured dance with Faith Jensen-Ismay and Amara Burkesmith, music with Julie Greathouse, visual arts with Stacie Greene, and theatre with Jerry Hager. Students learned the fundamentals of each art form and then showcased what they learned in a final performance for parents, teachers, family and friends. It was a huge success!
