Hilliard Harper

YA's Executive Director Retires
Announcing Hilliard Harper's Retirement from his position as Executive Director in May, 2010. During his 21 year tenure, Hilliard has helped YA grow in a multitude of ways. Here are only a few:

  • Raised annual operational budget from $32,000 to $630,000
  • Expanded staf from 1 to 4 people
  • Transitioned YA programs from primarily school assemblies to a healthy mix of residencies, workshops, and teacher training programs
  • Integrated the visual and performing arts standards into all YA programming
  • Tirelessly promotes YA and advocates for arts education in the San Diego region

For these substantial long term YA contributions and a myriad of others - hundreds of thousandes of San Diego youth are in his debt.

2010 Carol A. Smith
Volunteer of the Year

Carla Brown honored as
Volunteer of the Year *

carla brown

Young Audiences honors Carla Brown as Volunteer of the Year. For five years Carla has invested many hours of her time each year in our annual fundraiser, Summer Sol. She spends scores of hours on weekends during the year shopping for baskets for the silent auction and table decorations.  She also personally buys items to supplement the silent auction baskets. Carla decorates and organizes the baskets and then donates them all to Young Audiences.

A generous contributor, Carla is a member of Young Audiences' Full Circle Arts Society—those individuals who are dedicated to ensuring the continuity of Young Audiences’ arts in education programs for all children. Thank you, Carla, for your exceptional volunteerism and constant support!

 * The annual Volunteer of the Year Award is named in memory of Carol Alderson Smith who over many years of service to Young Audiences illustrated the personification of the ideal volunteer.
