YASD Programs

Young Audiences of San Diego (YASD) assemblies, workshops and residencies introduce students to the arts, and may connect to school curriculum in areas including math, language arts, science, history, social studies and multicultural studies.

YASD's programs inspire children's imagination and creativity. Students who actively participate in the
arts learn:

  • how to work independently and collaboratively
  • how to solve problems, making connections between seemingly unrelated topics and how to see a problem through to the end
  • how to develop communication skills as they express their ideas through a variety of modalities, including speaking, playing music, dancing, writing and creating images

OUR AUDIENCES AND ARTISTS are as diverse as the population of San Diego County. Last year our artists served over 53,000 students with 3,500 programs at 168 schools.

EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCES are more than the typical assembly program. These age-appropriate performances connect directly to state and district content standards in the visual and performing arts, literacy/language arts and history/social science.

IN ADDITION TO ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS
YASD offers an array of artist residencies and student and teacher staff development workshops. YASD selects artists based on the ability to work well with students and demonstrated excellence in their artforms.

MICHAEL ARATA

VISUAL ART — Michael Arata takes an intuitive approach with students, encouraging them to represent the world as they see it. Michael then helps to build their confidence and skills to represent what they see through texture, line, color and shapes. Experiments, accidents and exploration are all a part of the artistic process in Michael’s classes, which result in beautiful pieces of work that are genuine reflections of his students’ distinctive thoughts and vision.

STUDENTS PERFORMANCE/ THEATRE — In this residency Michael will help students create a performance using their own words and ideas. Through theater games and collaboration, students put together short plays to enliven curriculum or deal with social issues pertinent to their own experience. Working in small groups they combine drama, writing, dance, music, art and most importantly, cooperative skills. Visual and performing artist (and credentialed teacher) Michael leads the class through a simple, fun process to bring out their strengths, creativity and hidden talents.
