YASD RESIDENCY Programs

A series of workshops in which teaching artists, with the ongoing support and participation of classroom teachers, actively engage students in creative experiences.

Artist residencies offer students a chance to explore elements of an art form in depth while teachers
can use the residency as a staff development opportunity to learn how to teach lessons themselves. Residencies are normally for a minimum of three classrooms and take place one day a week for at least nine weeks. Each week’s lesson builds upon the previous week’s lesson.

Residency lesson plans are provided weekly, and align with the California Content Standards in the Visual and Performing Arts for the selected grade level. We strongly recommend that time be set aside for artists and classroom teachers to collaboratively plan the residency.

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL GROWTH RESIDENCY

In the STAR (Stimulating Teaching through Arts Residencies) program, YASD's Teaching Artists present model lessons for teachers, enabling classroom teachers to enhance both their skills and student learning in the arts and other subjects.

In-service Arts Workshops: YASD artists conduct in-service workshops in a particular art form for teacher professional development. Teachers may find new techniques and entirely new ways to teach a subject. In-services can be tailored to a school's specific needs. These workshops are a great way to help teachers become knowledgeable and comfortable enough to infuse singing, dance, theatre and visual art into every-day classroom programs.
