HIP-HOP IS EVERYWHERE
September - December 2006
Hip-hop is in a wind chime, in a toolbox, in a wig and in your heart! Eveoke's hip-hop assembly show utilizes the energy and enthusiasm of positive, contemporary hip-hop to demonstrate the origins and influence of rhythm and hip-hop movement across the globe. Hip-hop is in Ireland, Bali, China, Africa and elsewhere! Four extraordinary hip-hop dancers will infuse your students with curiosity, community-building and imagination.

RISE : THE DANCE OF HEROES AND HEROINES
January - December 2007
Eveoke weaves together passionate and powerful modern dance with positive hip-hop dance to create an inspiring tale that illuminates the qualities of heroes and heroines from our past and present.  This assembly uses real-life stories of youth from history, and like Hip Hop is Everywhere, includes audience participation.

SAN DIEGO BALLET
HAILSTONES & HALIBUT BONES BY MARY O'NEILL
OR THE NUTCRACKER

Enhance your literacy program through dance! Either of these performances presented by the San Diego Ballet gives students a behind-the-scenes peek into a ballet class that reveals the history of the ballet, demonstrations of basic ballet vocabulary and the elements of choreography and movement. This award-winning dance company then presents either the whimsical "HAILSTONES & HALIBUT BONES," based on Mary O'Neill's classic children's poetry book filled with powerful rhythms and rich language about the colors of the spectrum, or excerpts from the delightful seasonal classic, "THE NUTCRACKER."

MOJALET DANCE COLLECTIVE

ATHLETIC MOTION
Athletic Motion explores the relationships between athletics and dance, finding parallels and using athletic movement and gestures as a source for creating an artistic expression. The dances are high energy and full of movements inspired from a wide range of sports and martial arts.

DANCING THROUGH THE PAGES
Dancing Through The Pages uses literature as inspiration for dance. Stories, poems, and picture books and novels inspire creative movement. Inspiration for the program comes from book series and authors such as Al Perkins, Dr. Seuss, Chicken Soup, and The Hardy Boys.

BACH STEPS
Bach Steps brings a visual picture of great music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Our program brings movement while connecting the dance elements, time, space and energy, to musical terms such as allegro, adagio and tempo. In tribute to Mozart's 250th birthday celebration, we include a segment bringing characters to life from Mozart's Magic Flute.

PHILIPPINE AMERICAN DANCE
Starting with museum quality costumes, these vibrant young dancers offer a feast for the eyes, ears and mind. From the grace and mysticism of the Muslim south, to the fresh simplicity of rural regions, to the elegance of the Spanish colonial era, to the energetic mountain tribal choreography, this program will provoke a lively interest in the multiple cultures of this fascinating island nation.

BOLGA ZOHDOOMAH
FRA FRA LIFE
(Pronounciation: BOHL gah zoh DOOM ah FRAH FRAH)
Led by Ghanaiain master drummer and singer, Akayaa Atule, (uh KAH yahah TOO lay) the Bolga Zohdoomah dancers and drummers present a powerful, colorful, high energy introduction to Atule's Ghanaian Fra Fratribal culture. Attired in multihued costumes of Ghana, members of the band authentically recreate the rich dance and musical heritage of Ghanaian life such as harvest time, social initiations, an urban youth social dance and the "Happy Dance."  This participatory program allows selected students to dance and drum with the ensemble members, and all students will increase their knowledge of Ghana through the use of a map, national flag and various facts about Ghana along with the vibrant, unforgettable music and dance performances.

KOREAN CLASSICAL MUSIC AND DANCE COMPANY

KOREAN DANCE

Traditional Korean musical instruments and colorful costumes enliven thisinspiring assembly.  Starting with a brief introduction of Korea and its people, the troupe then presents "The Flower Crown Dance" (a typical court dance), followed by a solo performance on the KaYaKum (a 1,500-year-old string instrument).  The ensemble will also perform the "BukChum" drum dance with five drums and  the "Buchae Chum" fan dance.

MUSIC WITH A TWIST OF MIME
Two of San Diego's wackiest, most creative entertainers will ignite your students'  interest in literacy with these magnetic programs.

PIRATEOLOGY
Ahoy mateys! Meet Poop Deck Willy, Capt. Lowell Tide, Monterey Jack and lots of other colorful characters as they set sail on a learning adventure about pirates!  Social Studies comes alive with juggling, magic and audience interaction.

BOOKS ALIVE
Mime, clowning, music, juggling and student participation combine in a kaleidoscope of skits to encourage student reading. Jerry Hager is the mischief-making mime, Kazoo. Larry Keough, as Kazoo's sidekick, StuMulligan, sings, plays his guitar and juggles with nimble skill.

POETRY IN MOTION
With plenty of audience participation, poems leap off the printed page and come to life on stage through mime, music and the spoken word. For grades K-3, Kazoo and Stu show how simple nursery rhymes can become theatre. For grades 4-6, the comic duo's original verse and the poetry of authors such as Shel Silverstein and R.C. Scriven leave students eager to read more poetry and create their own poems.

AFRICAN HERITAGE
RHYTHM OF AFRICA
Internationally acclaimed musicians, Jason Hann (U.S.) and Aziz Faye(Senegal) bring to your school traditional African percussion instrumentsand dance movements from various regions of this great continent. African Heritage's program, "The Rhythm of
Africa," is an exhilarating experience that has been enthusiastically received throughout Southern California for over 10 years. The group uses audience participation and delivers a spectacular performance, combined with educational information for children to enjoy and understand the diversity of African culture (language, music and dance). The program encourages creative expression, aesthetic valuing, critical listening and an appreciation for the similarities and differences of other cultures.

ARBOL AZUL
A MUSICAL JOURNEY THROUGH LATIN AMERICA
Arbol Azul (ahr BOL aht SOOL)–blue tree in English–weaves music, song and myth in an exciting journey through Latin America. Musically visit Mexico, Argentina, Chile and the Andes Mountains of Bolivia and Peru. Listen to traditional instruments, from the charango (a small guitar made of armadillo) to an array of pan flutes and percussion instruments. Students participate by clapping, singing, dancing, playing instruments and recreating a Mayan myth using banners and paper mache elements.

BRASS TRINITY
TALES OF A TRIO
This lively trio of musicians explores with students the sights, sounds and sensations of the brass family of instruments, demonstrating a variety of music from medieval fanfares to the theme from "Star Wars."

WHAT MAKES MUSIC TICK
How do those little black marks on the paper translate into the beautiful music we hear? Brass Trinity offers a brief introduction to the brass family of instruments, then focuses on eight musical concepts including style,melody, rhythm and harmony.

CLASSIC BRASS QUINTET
The five splendid musicians of Classic Brass present two enlightening and immensely entertaining shows about brass instruments for your students.

SHAKESPEARE TO SOUSA
A lively musical journey through history. Students will sample a variety of music from the Italian Renaissance, to the 18th century's George Frederick Handel and Wolfgang Mozart, to the American diversity of Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington and John Phillip Sousa. Classic Brass will also engage the audience as they explain and demonstrate the history, construction and sounds of each instrument–tuba, trombone, French horn and trumpet. A memorable musical adventure.

WORLD HOLIDAY FESTIVAL
A winter holiday favorite. Classic Brass shares the ethnic and cultural holiday music of Mexico, Russia, France, England and the United States in unique musical arrangements. They also give students an opportunity tO sing along with well-known songs.

PERCUSSIONIST ED REEVES
MUSIC AROUND THE WORLD
In this interactive multicultural assembly, students see and hear a variety of drums and percussion instruments from around the world. Each instrument is played and some of the historical and cultural aspects of the instruments are illustrated. Basic music concepts such as call and response, the role of the conductor in an orchestra and musical meter are demonstrated.

GRASSOLOGY
BLUEGRASS 101
From the bluegrass fields of Kentucky, to Nashville's Grand Ol' Opry, to the movie "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" bluegrass music has for more than 60 years put smiles on people's faces and set their feet tapping.Three skillful, genial musicians introduce this uniquely American music with style and authenticity. With able assistance from student volunteers (there's a sing-along and a "strum-along"), the Grassology trio features a variety of toe-tapping songs and the hallmark bluegrass vocal harmonies played on five bluegrass instruments (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, 5-string banjo and string bass). After experiencing America's amazing bluegrass heritage, your students will not want to say goodbye to Grassology.

JAPANESE MUSIC TRIO
MUSIC OF JAPAN
Costumed in beautiful, traditional Japanese attire, these talented musicians will share with your students the classical instruments and music of Japan. The trio will introduce and demonstrate the six-foot long stringed koto, the shakuhachi (flute) and the banjo-like shamisen and play a variety of traditional and contemporary music. Students will participate by singing the beloved Japanese song, "Sakura."

DRUM CARNAVAL! A CELEBRATION OF CUBAN AND BRAZILIAN MUSIC
Your students will discover samba and the joyous celebration of life tha thappens in Brazil's annual Carnaval celebration. These gifted musicians, who perform on a varied array of percussion instruments, will give a taste of the fascinating musical rhythms of Brazil and Cuba and a short history of this music and its African heritage.

THE STRING FAMILY
WE'VE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING
Pop, folk, country, jazz–the String Family quartet can do it all when it comes to music. If you ever thought violins were boring, you haven't heard the String Family playing their four instruments:  violin, viola, cello and string bass. These four enthusiastic musicians demonstrate the range and varied uses of their instruments and different musical styles. Learning about musical instruments has never been more fun.

BIG JOE PUPPET PRODUCTIONS
PUPPETS AROUND THE WORLD
Big Joe explores the differences and similarities of world cultures using the diversity of puppets. This program reinforces social science through the art of puppetry. Programs can be customized for curriculm themes relating to Asia, England, Mexico and other countries.

NATURE'S SHADOWS
Shadow puppets are a new, fun and exciting way to tell stories.  Big Joe, the shadow master, will regale you with his stories: "Save The Rainforest," "The Whale Song," "Who Will Be My Friend?  and – back by popular demand –"The Princess' First Kiss."  Big Joe also demonstrates how to make shadow puppets and a simple theater.

SHADOWBALL: THE STORY OF BLACK BASEBALL
In the days before multi-million dollar baseball contracts there was Negro League Baseball. These were athletes who played with skill and a love for the game of baseball.  One of it's biggest stars was James Thomas "Cool Papa" Bell. Actor, singer, writer and director Rochel Garner Coleman recreates the life of this celebrated athlete considered by many to be the fastest man to ever play the game. Coleman, dressed in period uniform, examines the life and times of Bell and his fellow Negro Leaguers who strove to overcome perception and economics.

MISS SHIRLEY SEES GREATNESS IN YOU!
Through the use of infectious songs, role-playing and plenty of age-appropriate humor, talented stage actress Amy Mayer as Miss Shirley beckons children in grades K-3 to begin their path towards character development. When Miss Shirley sees greatness in children, she sees their strength of character!
For grades 4-6, Miss Shirley turns into professional actress Amy Mayer, who talks about finding character in the theatre, using examples from Shakespeare, musical theatre and Miss Shirley herself. "Miss Shirley Sees Greatness in You" combines the arts and literacy into an interactive program for students, proving character counts, no matter what business you may choose.

RUNNING GRUNION
Native American Abel Silvas portrays Running Grunion, "The California Indian Storyteller." An actor, historian, comedian, storyteller, mime and student of the Marcel Marceau School of Mime, Abel Silvas uses his talents to create a one-man show. His stories reveal what life was like for his Native American family during different times in California history from pre-Columbian, to the Spanish and Mission period, to the Mexican and Rancho period, and to American and Reservation periods. Students will learn how the indigenous California peoples adapted to changes and continue to be a vital part of today's society.

THE ANCESTRAL STORYTELLER
Calling storytelling "a mantel which was draped around my shoulders," Alyce Smith-Cooper introduces audiences to the world of African-American folklore through her vibrant words and expressive vocal technique. Alyce encourages students to explore their own personal stories and to ignite their own imagination, spontaneity and creativity. Students develop an awareness of a rich and colorful culture and learn to appreciate the magical world of the storyteller.

REIKO OBATA AND STEVEN GREGORY
MUSICAL FOLKTALES FROM ASIA & AFRICA
Writer, director and storyteller Steven Gregory and accomplished musician Reiko Obata bring to life folktales from Asia (Japan) and Africa.  The stories are accompanied by the Japanese koto (13-string zither), African mbira (thumb piano), drums, shakers and other instruments.  Discussionand audience involvement will further enrich students' understanding of Japanese and African culture including traditional dress and instruments. Both younger and older audiences will be charmed by these tales designed to spark students' imagination and encourage reading.

POETRY THAT ENTERTAINS AND ENLIGHTENS
Poets Ant Black (Anthony Blacksher) and Kendrick Dial present the art of spoken word poetry – poetry that entertains and enlightens.  Students will be inspired by their performance and gain an understanding of the history and importance of this innovative genre of poetry. Age appropriate assemblies will feature a variety of topics ranging from creativity, storytelling and emotions to social issues.

MASQUERADE
Theatre artist and educator Jerry Hager utilizes music, dialogue and props to present this unique program on the art of the mask in theatre. Students will expand their imagination through Hager's use of creative movement and non-verbal expression to tell a variety of stories.

BREAKING THE CLOWN BARRIER
The expression "class clown" takes on a new meaning when mime Jerry Hager enters the room!  Hager uses student participation, characterization, make-up and costuming to introduce students to the creativity of theatre. Students watch in amazement as Hager transforms himself on stage from teacher to clown in a positive, fun and educational manner.

BEHIND THE MASK
Take a peek "Behind the Mask" and watch stories come alive! Students stretch their imaginations by participating in fun workshop exercises and learning historical connections of art and history.

TEATRO MASCARA MAGICA
LOS VENDIDOS (THE SELLOUTS)

This swaggering one-act play by award-winning Chicano playwright Luis Valdez uses comedy and satire to explore issues of racism, ethnic stereotypes, cultural heritage and identity. Following the 25-minute play, the actors meet with the student audiences to discuss the play's themes and how theatre has helped the actors overcome obstacles and set new personal goals for their lives.

FERN STREET CIRCUS
Clown Otis (Fern Street Circus Artistic Director, Garry Irvingwhite) shows students how a narrative story can be told through the art of circus. Students will learn how the elements of character, movement, music and circus skills combine to create a circus production that tells a story. This is a wonderful companion workshop before or after a field trip to the Fern Street Circus.

RON AUERBACHER – HOPE AND DESPAIR: AMERICAN DRAMA
Students often feel that literature has nothing to do with them. But the characters in the great American dramas grapple with the same tumultuous family and social dynamics as do young people today: loneliness, racism, self-esteem and personal fulfillment. Ron Punit Auerbacher presents live and recorded performance highlights from "A Moon for the Misbegotten",  "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Death of a Salesman" and "A Raisin in the Sun."

RON AUERBACHER – SHAKESPEARE: THE RUDE MECHANICALS
A completely participatory program. Students perform the goofy and hilarious "rude mechanicals" play within a play from "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Props, scripts, costumes and music provided. Bonus: students will learn to hurl Elizabethan insults!

JULIE GREATHOUSE-SUAZO – ADDING MUSIC AND SONG TO YOUR CLASSROOM
Explore easy ways to invigorate any subject area with music! Custom design this workshop to suit your school's music plan.  Topics can include simple music, using the voice to its best potential without injury, creating a "really big show,"  California content standards in music – or pick a topic! This veteran musical theatre teaching artist will help teachers connect to the playful, creative musician within.

JERRY HAGER – IMPROVISATION IN THE CLASSROOM
This well-known, San Diego mime and theatre teacher demonstrates how exercises used by actors can sharpen student minds. Hager's hands-on workshop shows classroom teachers quick, fun methods to activate student's brains and enhance student learning in any lesson for any subject area. Using both verbal and non-verbal approaches, this workshop gives teachers handy techniques to stimulate critical thinking and sharpen student language and communication skills.

FAITH JENSEN-ISMAY
One of San Diego's top dancers shares with teachers easytechniques for using movement and dance in the classroom to enliven any subject area. Whether the subject is history, language arts, math or science, the artist shows teachers how to make kinesthetic connections that will add fun and excitement to the study of any subject, improve learning and enhance teaching skills.

MARILYN McPHIE – TAKE STOCK OF STORIES
Stories in the classroom–both those told by the teacher and the students–are a natural way to ignite student interest in language arts. This master storyteller polishes teachers' own storytelling skills while enabling teachers to boost student learning through storytelling basics such as luscious language, vivid imagery and crackling action. Teachers will practice using voice and gesture to fortify characters and enhance student listening. Marilyn may also share two favorite jewels, tailor made for the classroom: drawing and string stories.

SUSAN ROTHMAN – VISUAL ART 101
This credentialed teacher will share the basics of visual art to help teachers develop strategies and instructional techniques that enhance classroom programs. Choice of media–watercolor, charcoal, clay, pastels, crayons or multimedia.

AKAYAA ATULE
(Pronounced uh KAH yuh ah TOO leh) This native Ghanaian master dancer and drummer will teach students traditional dances that incorporate movements taken from Ghanaian village life, such as a harvest dance, a social initiation dance or a Ghanaian children's dance. Students will learn movement patterns, sequencing and floor patterns, but more importantly, the joy of dance.

ERICA BUECHNER
Ericka Buechner challenges students to transform everyday movement into dance. In this residency, students begin by learning basic dance technique through a large group warm up. They will then explore dance concepts, (such as energy, time, space, balance, creative expression and aesthetic appreciation), individually or through small group exercises.

AMARA BURKESMITH – CITY MOVES!
Amara Burkesmith's dance classes incorporate movement exploration through the Language of Dance® approach (use of a dance notation system) and working intermodally through the use of Expressive Arts. Classes consist of creating individually, in small groups and as an entire class, leading to choreography that students can demonstrate during a final performance. Classes may also be thematic or linked to other curricular areas.

JESSICA CURIEL – CITY MOVES!
Jessica incorporates creative activities and choreographic exercises to create a fun and cooperative class setting. Jessica integrates language arts in her dance classes by creating movement with your child based on classroom books, themes, characters and iconic images. Your child will also create movement that explores their imaginations and feelings. For upper grades, Jessica will incorporate pop culture movement and music in order to create a class that truly excites and speaks to your students.

Suzanne Forbes-Vierling, master African Dancer, provides a powerful, colorful, high-energy introduction to West African tribal culture. Your students will learn the rich dance and musical heritage of West African life such as understanding the difference between a continent, region and country; the names and meaning of dances; clothes and jewelry; and traditional drums. Students will learn the ease of increasing their self-esteem by feeling proud of personal accomplishments and rooting for the best in others in their community.

KRYSTINA GRAMMATICA
Born in Greece, Krystina perfoms and creates art in San Diego. Her classes explore the creative dance vocabulary (space, time, energy) and dance technique. She encourages students to develop their own creative movement and learn the structure of choreography. Students' choreography themes are chosen by the students or the classroom teacher: literacy (poetry, folktales, etc.), history, Science Moves! (from environment to matter), modern dance and more.

LIV ISAACS-NOLLET
Both Liv's parents are dancers. Her father was a teaching artist with Young Audiences. Liv creates a warm and encouraging environment for children to explore dance and creative movement. Your students will learn musicality, spatial awareness, the importance of different energies used in dance, a variety of different movement “games” and a dance to showcase their experiences.

ROBBY J – CITY MOVES!
Robby J's thematic classes inspire kids to be creative, cooperative and supportive of each other while learning basic modern dance, hip-hop and creative dance movement. Students begin by learning basic dance technique as well as hip-hop footwork and break-dancing basics. Students will then work together to create dances inspired by their own culture. Past themes have included dances about sports, super heroes, friends and more.

FAITH JENSEN-ISMAY
This dance residency challenges students to transform poetry into dance, exploring connections among words, meaning, rhythm, music and movement. As students work on warm-ups, they build body awareness and creative expression using a combination of popular, modern and jazz dance. Dance concepts introduced include energy, time, space, balance, creative expression and aesthetic appreciation.

Cybele is a professional Afro-Cuban dancer and an experi-enced teacher who fuses Afro-Cuban history, dance and culture into a class that focuses on individual students' creative development. Students will learn dance technique, the creative movement vocabulary and how to create their own dances. Dance classes can be designed tofocus on themes chosen by the classroom teacher.

Jennifer's primary focus is to create a dance class that is a positive, supportive and fun environment. TRANSCENDANCE
The transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project is a dance theatre youth company based out of City Heights. We aim to empower youth through the life-affirming power of the arts and performance. Residencies are co-led by the company director, has over 10 years teaching experience and a veteran teen company dancer. Our model is to engage the youth we work with through movement activities, exploring time, space, and energy that even the inexperienced, non-technical dance student can enjoy.

MICHAEL K. ARATA – STUDENT ERFORMANCE/THEATRE
In this residency students will create a performance using their own words and ideas. Through theater games and collaboration, students put together short plays to enliven curriculum or deal with social issues pertinent to their own experience. Working in small groups they combine drama, writing, dance, music, art and most importantly, cooperative skills. Visual and performing artist (and credentialed teacher) Michael K. Arata leads the class through a simple, fun process to bring out their strengths, creativity and hidden talents.

JULIE GREATHOUSE-SUAZO – FESTIVAL AMERICANA
Students will learn and perform dramatic and light-hearted excerpts from great American speeches, important writings along with historic documents and events. The excerpts will be enlivened by the students' performance of memorable and inspiring patriotic and classic American songs from differenteras. A minimum of nine weeks is required to prepare and rehearse.

JULIE GREATHOUSE-SUAZO & LOREA HERALD – BROADWAY BOUND

By learning and performing celebrated Broadway classics, students will frame a new perspective on history and literature in this integrated performance project. The residency combines age-appropriate scene study, choreographed musical numbers and hands-on experience with sound and lighting. Students examine how theatre reflects the attitudes, styles, literature, musical tastes and historical context of its time. This residency provides an opportunity for students to expand self-confidence, self-discipline and augment their verbal and non-verbal communication skills. All rehearsals and performances include live accompaniment and costumes will be provided.

AMY MAYER – MUSICALLY SPEAKING CHORUS PROGRAM

In this residency students learn and explore eight elements of music: dynamics, form, harmony, pitch, rhythm, tempo, texture and timbre. Working with Amy, a professional actress and singer, they will also learn how to write a song that can be performed for their classrooms or school.

MARY-ANN MURNANE & ALEJANDRO ESPINO: INDIGENOUS MUSIC MARY-ANN MURNANE

Born in Australia, Mary-Ann is a professional musician who plays accordian, piano and percussion. Mary-Ann and her husband Alejandro direct the Latin American folk music group Arbol Azul, based in Tijuana, Mexico. She teaches traditional songs, rhythms and musical games from around the world. The children will also create an original song under her guidance.

ALEJANDRO ESPINO
Born in Mexico, Alejandro is a professional musician who plays a wide range of traditional Latin American string instruments. Alejandro and his wife Mary-Ann direct the Latin American folk music group ‘arbol azul,' based in Tijuana, Mexico. He teaches students music and instrument making. The program includes: songs and rhythms from Latin America. The children will also make an instrument from recycled materials.

VENVERLOH
Kathryn Venverloh teaches an introduction to theatre and acting residency that investigates theatrical modes of self-expression. Students learn to work individually and as an ensemble to create work using rhythm and music, mime, storytelling, role-playing and movement. Most of all, students are encouraged to find their own voice, express themselves and have fun!

ANT BLACK – SPOKEN WORD
Ant Black and Kendrick Dial are spoken-word artists who use performance to bring life and energy to poetry. In this residency students will not only enhance their creative writing, but they will also learn to write poetry intended to be performed. Through exercises, students will learn to explore their poetic voice and develop public speaking skills through the art of spoken word.

JAMES HORNSBY – POETRY OF LIFE
While learning to write poetry in this residency, students will gain awareness of their personal compasses, exercise right/left brain integration and learn about meter in writing, rhythms in life, and their own take on what's important. From literary personification and alliteration to conflict resolution, this poetry residency develops students' intuitive awareness of their world and helps them reclaim their oral culture traditions.

HEADS ON FIRE – DIGITAL MEDIA/MUSIC
This residency is delivered by Heads on Fire, a San Diego non-profit dedicated to providing access to technology for distressed and underserved communities to affect positive social change. In this high-tech residency, students create music in contemporary electronic idioms that references traditional musical forms from their own ethnic heritage. This residency promotes cultural competence, encouraging intergenerational interaction and enhances students' sense of self-worth. Participating students have the opportunity to interview, and even record, elders in their families and communities, thus adding unique depth and greater personal context to their electronic music mixes.

JERRY HAGER – THEATRE OF MIME
Jerry Hager provides a hands-on overview of the elements of mime including the history of the art of pantomime.Students will create solo, duo and group mime scenes and use “The Giving Tree” as a final exercise project. Hager employs theatrical experiences, scene work, improvisation and movement that integrate with other curriculum areas.

ABEL SILVAS – TALES OF NATIVE CALIFORNIA
Well-known Native American storyteller and mime, Abel Silvas introduces students to native Californian cultures. Adapting the tradition of oral historians, Silvas helps shape students' storytelling skills through mime. Students will study and develop a working vocabulary of non-verbal communication techniques. Employing mime, participants will learn to present classic Native Californian tales and develop their own mythic stories to present in mime tradition.

MARILYN McPHIE – STORYTELLING FOR STUDENTS
Popular local storyteller, Marilyn McPhie, shares stories and tips from her bag of tricks to build student skills in writing, public speaking and listening. She guides and inspires students to voice their own tall tales. Students will learn new ways to use their voices and gestures to hone their communication skills. Separate sessions explore string stories, drawing stories, family stories and stories from around the world. The residency reinforces linear reasoning, understanding of story structure and character development, and encourages positive values through the "moral of the story."

RON PUNIT AUERBACHER – BANG BANG, YOU'RE DEAD
This acclaimed play about campus bullying and violence has become a theatrical phenomenon, being performed thousands of times in schools around the nation. Students rehearse and perform playwright William Mastrosimone's stunning anti-violence play for other students. Based upon a real-life incident in 1998, this riveting play and the mandated post-play forum enable students to talk and reflect on issues important to them: bullying, violence and youth alienation. Can be fully staged or presented as readers theatre for other students, faculty and parents.

Learn new techniques from a theatre expert to enhance other curriculum areas through theatre. Professional entertainer, director, actor and teacher, James Dublino brings a cornucopia of expertise to your classroom to inspire students, spark their imagination and engage them in creative learning about a topic of your (the teacher's) choosing. James draws on his experience, including theatre games, scene work, mime, voice and movement, and improvisation to collaborate with grade level teams and to improve student learning through theatre.

Creative actor/director/mime, Jerry Hager ignites student interest with a unique theatre residency program. Each residency is designed to fit the curriculum chosen by the school. KALIN HOVE
Kalin Hove focuses on building confidence, communication skills and cultivating creative expression through theatre. Each class includes a section on speech, movement and improvisation. Students are able to explore their creative potential while building the skills needed for effective communication. Though the class is very structured, the content is extremely flexible and may be tailored to other subjects and curriculum the class may be studying. A culminating performance incorporates the skills learned in class in a wonderful opportunity for students to feel the excitement of performing within a casual and safe environment.

LARRY KEOUGH – VAUDEVILLE VARIETY
Vaudeville stage from 1870-1930 will come to life in this intriguing and timeless residency experience. The multi-talented performer, Larry Keough, will guide the students in developing a showcase for their unique talents–be they magic, comedy, music or spectacle. Students will integrate music, oral presentation, visual arts and the application of technical stage lighting and sound through this historical recreation.

Jeannine Marquie is a professional teacher and actor in San Diego. She will be teaching your students how to be great communicators through acting practices and techniques. Through fun exercises and script work, students will gain confidence and have the opportunity to perform.

AMY MAYER – CREATING CHARACTER
This professional actress/singer teaches from the inside out how to create a character in all forms of theatre: Shakespeare, musical theatre or comedy. Amy teachers children how to enjoy the journey of finding a character in the theatre and in the meantime have fun learning how to explore the many facets of themselves.

MILO SHAPIRO – MONOLOGUE
Mr. Milo will teach students skills in improvising and monologue. Improvisation games will help students tap into their creativity and channel it in a format that gives a defined outlet. Monologuing provides students an opportunity to consider, create, rehearse and perform material that speaks to them because they have written it.

If you can write your name, you can learn to see and draw the world around you. So says Pete Evaristo. A painter and community public art coordinator, Pete draws relationships between art, math, science or history. Beginning with nature drawing, this residency evolves based on communication with students, teachers and parents, plus it teaches educators along the way. This residency emphasizes both self-expression and teamwork, and a sense of pride and identity through the creation of murals, mosaics and other site-specific public artwork.

SUSAN ROTHMAN – VISUAL ART BASICS
Students explore the elements and concepts of visual art.This veteran credentialed teacher and art specialist will illustrate the basics of line, shape, value, form, color mixing and introduce perspective. Students will build a portfolio of their works, explore how visual art is used in society as a career path, and learn to minimize their fear of making mistakes.

Since Africa focuses on the resettlement of one “Lost Boy of Sudan” in the United States.  His experiences, as he tries to understand his new home, are reflected back on two American volunteers whose job it is to acclimate him to urban America.  The challenges and complexities of the refugee experience in America are made clear as the audience observes that perhaps we have all been “lost” at one time or another.
